Microsoft SQL Server Database Consistency Checker (DBCC) buffer overflow

mssql-dbcc-bo-variant (10255) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

Microsoft SQL Server 2000, Microsoft Desktop Engine (MSDE) 2000, Microsoft SQL Server 7.0, and Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) 1.0 are vulnerable to several buffer overflows in multiple Database Consistency Checker (DBCC) utilities. Database Consistency Checkers are tools that allow administrators to easily perform common maintenance tasks on databases. Several DBCC utilities fail to properly validate user-supplied input. A remote attacker with any SQL Server privileges could exploit this vulnerability by supplying a malformed parameter to one of the affected DBCC utilities, which would overflow a buffer, causing the SQL Server service to crash or allowing the attacker to execute code with elevated privileges.

Note: This is a new variant of a vulnerability previously discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-038. See References.

Note: This vulnerability also affects Cisco CallManager version 3.3(x), Cisco Unity versions 3.x and 4.x, and Cisco Building Broadband Service Manager versions 5.0 and 5.1, which incorporate the use of either SQL Server 2000 or MSDE 2000.

Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-018. See References.

Note: Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS02-038, but it was superseded by the patch released with MS02-056 and MS02-062, and then superseded by the patch released with MS03-018.

For Cisco CallManager, Cisco Unity, and Cisco Building Broadband Service Manager: Refer to Cisco Security Advisory 2003 January 26 05:30 GMT for upgrade or patch information. See References.
