SGI IRIX rpcbind -w /tmp symlink
| irix-rpcbind-w-symlink (10272) |
Description:
SGI IRIX is vulnerable to a symlink attack when starting the rpcbind utility with the -w option. rpcbind is a utility that can be installed as part of the "eoe.sw.svr4net" package. A local attacker could create a symbolic link from the /tmp directory to any file on the system, which would be overwritten once rpcbind receives a SIGINT or SIGTERM signal. An attacker could use this vulnerability to corrupt critical system files and possibly cause a denial of service or gain elevated privileges on the system.
Consequences:
File Manipulation
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of IRIX (6.5.18 or later), as listed in SGI Security Advisory 20021103-02-P. See References.
— OR —
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in SGI Security Advisory 20021103-02-P. See References.
