Microsoft Windows kernel LpcRequestWaitReplyPort() buffer overflow
| win-kernel-lpcrequestwaitreplyport-bo (11803) |
Description:
Microsoft Windows is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow in the Microsoft Windows kernel (ntoskrnl.exe), caused by improper bounds checking of error messages by the LpcRequestWaitReplyPort() function. If a local attacker could cause an overly large message to be passed to and from the Windows kernel and the debugger, the attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the operating system kernel.
Consequences:
Gain Privileges
Remedy:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-013. See References.
For Windows XP SP1:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS05-018. See References.
Note: Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS03-013, but it was superseded by the patch released with MS04-044, and then superseded by the patch released with MS05-018.
