Description:

Carnegie Mellon University's Cyrus-SASL library is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the digestmd5.c 1.170 file. The digestmd5.c 1.170 is used in the DIGEST-MD5 SASL plugin. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the application calling the Cyrus-SASL libraries.

Note: It is reported that the digestmd5.c 1.170 file was not included in any official releases.

Remedy:

For Gentoo Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of Cyrus-SASL (2.1.18-r2 or later), as listed in GLSA 200410-05 / Cyrus-SASL. See References.

For Conectiva Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of sasl2, as listed below. Refer to Conectiva Linux Security Announcement CLSA-2005:959 for information. See References.
