Linux kernel TIOCSETD race condition
| linux-tiocsetd-race-condition (17816) |
Description:
Linux kernel is vulnerable to a denial of service attack, caused by a race condition. A local attacker could issue a TIOCSETD ioctl while another thread is performing read or write operations to cause the system to crash and possibly gain access to arbitrary kernel data.
Consequences:
Denial of Service
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of Linux kernel (2.6.9 or later), available from the Linux Kernel Web site. See References.
For Ubuntu Linux:
Upgrade to the latest linux-image package (2.6.8.1-16.3 or later), as listed in USN-38-1 December 14, 2004 for more information. See References.
For Mandrake Linux:
Upgrade to the latest kernel package, as listed below. Refer to MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2005:022 for more information. See References.
Mandrake Linux 9.2: 2.4.22.41mdk-1-1mdk or later
Mandrake Linux 10.0/AMD64: 2.4.25.13mdk-1-1mdk or later
Mandrake Linux 10.1: 2.4.28.0.rc1.5mdk-1-1mdk or later
Mandrake Linux Multi Network Firewall 8.2: 2.4.19.48mdk-1-1mdk or later
Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 2.1: 2.4.19.48mdk-1-1mdk or later
Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 3.0: 2.4.25.13mdk-1-1mdk or later
For SUSE Linux:
Upgrade to the latest kernel, as listed below. Refer to SUSE Security Announcement SUSE-SA:2005:018 for more information. See References.
x86:
SUSE Linux 9.2: 2.6.8-24.13 or later
SUSE Linux 9.1: 2.6.5-7.151 or later
SUSE Linux 9.0: 2.4.21-280 or later
SUSE Linux 8.2: 2.4.20.SUSE-131 or later
x86-64 Platform:
SUSE Linux 9.2: 2.6.8-24.13 or later
SUSE Linux 9.1: 2.6.5-7.151 or later
SUSE Linux 9.0: 2.4.21-280 or later
For Red Hat Linux:
Refer to RHSA-2005:293-16 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.

- CVE-2004-0814: Multiple race conditions in the terminal layer in Linux 2.4.x, and 2.6.x before 2.6.9, allow (1) local users to obtain portions of kernel data via a TIOCSETD ioctl call to a terminal interface that is being accessed by another thread, or (2) remote attackers to cause a denial of service (panic) by switching from console to PPP line discipline, then quickly sending data that is received during the switch.
