Description:

BNC is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking of user-supplied input in the getnickuserhost function in the cmds.c file when processing IRC server responses. A remote attacker could use this vulnerability to overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system or cause a denial of service.

Remedy:

Upgrade to the latest version of BNC IRC (2.9.1 or later), available from the IRC Proxy Download Web page. See References.

For Gentoo Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of BNC (2.9.1 or later), as listed in GLSA 200411-24. See References.

For Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (alias woody):
Upgrade to the latest BNC package (2.6.4-3.3 or later), as listed in DSA-595-1. See References.

For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.
