Linux kernel smb_proc_readX_data denial of service

linux-smbprocreadxdata-dos (18135) The risk level is classified as LowLow Risk

Description:

Linux kernel is vulnerable to a denial of service attack, caused by a vulnerability in the smb_proc_readX_data function. A remote attacker, in control of a malicious SMB server, could send a specially-crafted packet to cause the kernel to crash.

Consequences:

Denial of Service

Remedy:

For Ubuntu Linux:
Upgrade to the latest linux-image package (2.6.8.1_2.6.8.1-16.10 or later), as listed in USN-60-0 January 14, 2005 for more information. See References.

For Red Hat Linux:
Upgrade to the latest kernel package, as listed below. Refer to RHSA-2004:549-10 for more information. See References.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop and ES, AS, WS (v. 3): 2.4.21-20.0.1.EL or later

For SUSE Linux:
Upgrade to the latest kernel package, as listed in SUSE-SA:2004:042, 2004 for more information. See References.

For SUSE Linux:
Apply the appropriate fixed packages via the SUSE FTP server or the YaST Online Update, as listed in SUSE Security Summary Report SUSE-SR:2004:003. See References.

For Debian GNU/Linux:
Refer to DSA-1070-1, DSA-1069-1, DSA-1067-1, or DSA-1082-1 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.

For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.
