Description:

NASM is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking in the error function in the preproc.c file. By creating a specially-crafted .asm file, a local attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the user. In order for the attacker to exploit this vulnerability, the attacker must trick the victim into assembling a malicious .asm file on the victim's local system.

For Ubuntu Linux:
Upgrade to the latest nasm package (0.98.38-1ubuntu0.1 or later), as listed in USN-45-1 December 22, 2004 for more information. See References.

For Gentoo Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of nasm (0.98.38-r1 or later), as listed in GLSA 200412-20 . See References.

For Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (alias woody):
Upgrade to the latest version of nasm (0.98.28cvs-1woody2 or later), as listed in Debian Security Advisory Debian Security Advisory DSA-623-1 . See References.

For Red Hat Linux:
