Description:

The Common Unix Printing System (CUPS) is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking in the ParseCommand function in the hpgl-input.c file. By creating a specially-crafted HPGL file, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with user privileges, once the file is processed.

Remedy:

Upgrade to the latest version of CUPS (1.1.23rc1 or later), as listed in the CUPS Software Trouble Report #1024. See References.

For Ubuntu Linux containing the cupsys, cupsys-client or libcupsimage2 package:
Upgrade to the latest version (1.1.20final+cvs20040330-4ubuntu16.3 or later), as listed in USN-50-1 December 23, 2004 for more information. See References.

For Mandrake Linux:
Upgrade to the latest cups package as listed below. Refer to MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2005:008 for more information. See References.
