Description:

LinPopUp is vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking in the strexpand function in the 'string.c' file. By sending a specially-crafted message to LinPopUp, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with privileges of the LinPopUp process, once the message is viewed.

Remedy:

For Gentoo Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of linpopup (2.0.4-r1 or later), as listed in GLSA 200501-01. See References.

For Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 (woody):
Upgrade to the latest package of linpopup (1.2.0-2woody1 or later), as listed in Debian Security Advisory DSA-632-1. See References.
