win-ms05kb890261-update (19252) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 890261 is not installed, which could allow a remote attacker to exploit the following two vulnerabilities:

Microsoft Windows Media Player is a multimedia player for many formats of music and video files. Windows Media Player version 9 (when running on Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Server 2003), Microsoft MSN Messenger 6.1 and 6.2, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE and Windows ME are vulnerable to a buffer overflow, caused by improper handling of PNG (Portable Network Graphics) files. By creating a PNG file containing a large width or height value, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system, once the malicious PNG file is opened.

libpng is a Portable Network Graphics (PNG) library. libpng is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the png_handle_sBIT and png_handle_tRNS functions, caused by improper bounds checking. Windows Messenger implements version 1.2.5 of the public library. By creating a specially-crafted PNG image, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system, once the image is processed by libpng.

Platforms Affected:

  • Microsoft, MSN Messenger 6.1
  • Microsoft, MSN Messenger 6.2
  • Microsoft, Windows 2000

  • CVE-2004-0597: Multiple buffer overflows in libpng 1.2.5 and earlier, as used in multiple products, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via malformed PNG images in which (1) the png_handle_tRNS function does not properly validate the length of transparency chunk (tRNS) data, or the (2) png_handle_sBIT or (3) png_handle_hIST functions do not perform sufficient bounds checking.
  • CVE-2004-1244: Windows Media Player 9 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a PNG file containing large (1) width or (2) height values, aka the PNG Processing Vulnerability.
