gzip zgrep and bzgrep code execution
| gzip-zgrep-bzgrep-code-execution (20539) |
Description:
gzip (GNU zip) could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system, caused by a vulnerability in the zgrep and bzgrep utilities. By persuading a victim to run zgrep or bzgrep on a file with a specially-crafted filename, a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to execute arbitrary code on the vulnerable system.
Consequences:
File Manipulation
Remedy:
For Mac OS:
Apply Apple Security Update 2007-007, available from the Apple Web site. See References.
For Gentoo Linux:
Upgrade to the latest version of gzip (1.3.5-r6 or later), as listed in GLSA 200505-05. See References.
For Red Hat Linux (bzip):
Refer to RHSA-2005:0474-21 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For Red Hat Linux (gzip):
Refer to RHSA-2005:357-19 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For Ubuntu Linux:
Refer to USN-158-1 and USN-161-1 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For OpenPKG (bzip2 1.03 and prior):
Refer to OpenPKG Security Advisory OpenPKG-SA-2007.002 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.
