NTP incorrect group permissions
| ntp-incorrect-group-permissions (22035) |
Description:
Network Time Protocol Daemon (ntpd) could allow a local attacker to cause the ntpd to run with incorrect group permissions caused by a vulnerability in the handling of the -u command line option. The NTP fails to properly handle the -u command line option once the group name is specified when using a string. A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability to run with the gid of the user rather than with permissions of that of the group.
Platforms Affected:
- Canonical, Ubuntu 4.10
- David L. Mills, ntpd prior to 4.2.0b
- Debian, Debian Linux 3.1
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 4 WS
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 4 ES
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 4 AS
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 4 Desktop
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of NTP (4.2.0b or later), available from the NTP Software Downloads Web page. See References.
For Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (sarge):
Upgrade to the latest version of NTP (4.2.0a+stable-2sarge1or later), as listed in DSA-801-1. See References.
For Ubuntu Linux:
Refer to USN-175-1 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For Red Hat Linux:
Refer to RHSA-2006:0393-6 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.
Consequences:
Gain Privileges
