XMail AddressFromAtPtr function buffer overflow
| xmail-addressfromatptr-bo (22724) |
Description:
XMail is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow caused by improper bounds checking in the AddressFromAtPtr function. By sending specially-crafted email addresses containing a long -t command line option, a local attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges. It may be possible for a local attacker to use this vulnerability to view all encrypted mail that is stored locally within the system mail folders.
Consequences:
Gain Access
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of XMail (1.22 or later), available from the XMail Home Web page. See References.
As a workaround, restrict local mail delivery while using a standard mail user-agent to communicate to the XMail SMTP server. See References.
For Debian GNU/Linux:
Refer to DSA-902-1 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For Gentoo Linux:
Refer to Gentoo Linux Security Announcement GLSA 2005-12-05 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
