Description:

Microsoft Windows is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the Workstation service, caused by improper bounds checking by the NetpManageIPCConnect function. By sending a specially-crafted message to an affected system, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with SYSTEM privileges.

Platforms Affected:

  • Microsoft, Windows 2000 SP4
  • Microsoft, Windows XP SP2

Remedy:

Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-070. See References.
