Apple AirPort driver probe response code execution
| airport-driver-code-execution (29965) |
Description:
The Apple AirPort driver used with Orinoco-based 802.11 wireless cards could allow a remote attacker within wireless range to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by improper handling of probe response frames containing invalid information element (IE) fields. If the driver is in active scanning mode, an attacker could send a specially-crafted probe response to corrupt kernel memory and execute arbitrary code on the targeted system.
Platforms Affected:
- Apple, Mac OS X 10.3.9
- Apple, Mac OS X 10.4.8
- Apple, Mac OS X Server 10.3.9
- Apple, Mac OS X Server 10.4.8
Remedy:
Apply Apple Security Update 2006-007, available from the Apple Web site. See References.
Consequences:

- CVE-2006-5710: The Airport driver for certain Orinoco based Airport cards in Darwin kernel 8.8.0 in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via an 802.11 probe response frame without any valid information element (IE) fields after the header, which triggers a heap-based buffer overflow.
