Apple Mac OS X com.apple.AppleDiskImageController denial of service
| macosx-dmg-dos (30440) |
Description:
Apple Mac OS X is vulnerable to a denial of service, caused by improper handling of DMG files by the com.apple.AppleDiskImageController that could lead to memory corruption. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability to cause a denial of service, if the attacker could persuade the victim to load a specially-crafted DMG file.
Platforms Affected:
- Apple, Mac OS X 10.3.9
- Apple, Mac OS X 10.4.8
- Apple, Mac OS X Server 10.3.9
- Apple, Mac OS X Server 10.4.8
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of Mac OS X (10.4.9 or later) or apply Apple Security Update 2007-003. See References.
Consequences:

- CVE-2006-6061: com.apple.AppleDiskImageController in Apple Mac OS X 10.4.8, and possibly other versions, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a malformed DMG image that triggers memory corruption. NOTE: the severity of this issue has been disputed by a third party, who states that the impact is limited to a denial of service (kernel panic) due to a vm_fault call with a non-aligned address.
