Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi (MADWIFI) giwscan_cb() and encode_ie() buffer overflow

madwifi-giwscan-encode-bo (30800) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi (MADWIFI) is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking by the giwscan_cb() and encode_ie() functions when handling a malicious beacon request or frames with an invalid supported-rates information element. By sending a specially-crafted 802.11 management frame to a vulnerable system, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges or cause the system to crash, if the attacker is in range of the affected device.

Platforms Affected:

  • Canonical, Ubuntu 6.10
  • Gentoo, Linux
  • Madwifi Driver, Madwifi Driver 0.9.2 and prior
  • Novell, OpenSUSE 10.2
