Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi (MADWIFI) giwscan_cb() and encode_ie() buffer overflow
| madwifi-giwscan-encode-bo (30800) |
Description:
Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi (MADWIFI) is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking by the giwscan_cb() and encode_ie() functions when handling a malicious beacon request or frames with an invalid supported-rates information element. By sending a specially-crafted 802.11 management frame to a vulnerable system, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with elevated privileges or cause the system to crash, if the attacker is in range of the affected device.
Platforms Affected:
- Canonical, Ubuntu 6.10
- Gentoo, Linux
- Madwifi Driver, Madwifi Driver 0.9.2 and prior
- Novell, OpenSUSE 10.2
- SuSE, SuSE Linux 10.0
- SuSE, SuSE Linux 9.3
- SuSE, SuSE SLED 10
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of Multiband Atheros Driver for WiFi (MADWIFI) (0.9.2.1 or later), available from the MADwiFi News Web site. See References.
