MediaWiki index.php cross-site scripting
| mediawiki-index-xss (32586) |
Description:
MediaWiki is vulnerable to cross-site scripting, caused by improper validation of user-supplied input by the index.php script. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability using the rs parameter in a specially-crafted URL to execute script in a victim's Web browser within the security context of the hosting Web site, once the URL is clicked. An attacker could use this vulnerability to steal the victim's cookie-based authentication credentials.
Note: In order to exploit this vulnerability on MediaWiki 1.8.3 - 1.9.2, the attacker would first be required to UTF-7 encode the URL, and browser encoding auto-detection must be enabled. Versions 1.8.2 and prior do not require encoding.
Platforms Affected:
- Wikimedia Foundation, MediaWiki 1.9.2 and prior
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of MediaWiki (1.9.3 or later), available from the MediaWiki Web site. See References.
Consequences:
