X MultiMedia System (xmms) skin bitmap image code execution

xmms-skinbitmap-code-execution (33205) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

X MultiMedia System (xmms) could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on a system, caused by an integer overflow. By creating a specially-crafted skin bitmap image file with a malicious header, an attacker could corrupt system memory and execute arbitrary code on the system, if the attacker could persuade the victim to view the malicious image file.

Platforms Affected:

  • 4Front Tech, XMMS 1.2.10
  • Canonical, Ubuntu 5.10
  • Canonical, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
  • Canonical, Ubuntu 6.10
  • Debian, Debian Linux 3.1
  • MandrakeSoft, Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 3.0
  • MandrakeSoft, Mandrake Linux Corporate Server 3.0 X86_64

Remedy:

For Debian GNU/Linux 3.1 (XMMS):
Refer to DSA-1277-1 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
