Trillian UTF-8 buffer overflow

trillian-utf8-bo (34918) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

Trillian is vulnerable to a heap-based buffer overflow, caused by improper validation of UTF-8 messages when the MSN protocol is used. By persuading the victim to view a specially-crafted UTF-8-encoded message, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with the victim's privileges.

Platforms Affected:

  • Cerulean Studios, Trillian prior to 3.1.6.0
  • Microsoft, Windows Vista

Remedy:

Upgrade to the latest version of Trillian (3.1.6.0 or later), available from the Trillian Web site. See References.
