mIRC DCC Server allows metacharacters in filenames

Description:

mIRC does not filter metacharacters (such as . and \) from sent filenames. A remote attacker could send a seemingly harmless, malicious file and use metacharacters to stage it in a destination directory on the hard drive, such as the autostart directory.

Platforms Affected:

  • mIRC, mIRC DCC Server 5.5

Remedy:

Upgrade to the latest version of mIRC (5.91 or later), available from the mIRC Web site. See References.
