FreeBSD libarchive pax buffer overflow
| freebsd-libarchive-pax-bo (35405) |
Description:
FreeBSD libarchive is vulnerable to a buffer overflow. By persuading a victim to open a specially-crafted archive file with a malicious pax header, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system or cause the application to crash.
Platforms Affected:
- Debian, Debian Linux 4.0
- FreeBSD, FreeBSD 5.5
- FreeBSD, FreeBSD 6.1
- FreeBSD, FreeBSD 6.2
- FreeBSD, libarchive 2.2.3
- Gentoo, Linux
- SuSE, SuSE Linux
Remedy:
Refer to FreeBSD-SA-07:05.libarchive for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For Gentoo Linux (libarchive):
Refer to GLSA 200708-03 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For SUSE Linux:
Refer to SUSE-SR:2007:015 for patch, upgrade, or suggested workaround information. See References.
For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.

- CVE-2007-3641: archive_read_support_format_tar.c in libarchive before 2.2.4 does not properly compute the length of a certain buffer when processing a malformed pax extension header, which allows user-assisted remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted (1) PAX or (2) TAR archive that triggers a buffer overflow.
