Description:

The RealNetworks RealPlayer IERPCtl ActiveX control (ierpplug.dll) is vulnerable to a stack-based buffer overflow, caused by improper bounds checking in the Database Component in MPAMedia.dll. By persuading a victim to visit a specially-crafted Web page using Microsoft Internet Explorer, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with the privileges of the victim or cause the application to crash.

  • Real, RealPlayer 10.0
  • Real, RealPlayer 10.5
  • Real, RealPlayer 11 Beta

Remedy:

For RealPlayer 10.5 and 11 beta:
Apply the patch for this vulnerability (securitydb.rnx), available from the RealNetworks Web site. See References.

For RealOne Player, RealOne Player v2 and RealPlayer 10:
Upgrade to the latest version of RealPlayer (10.5 or 11 beta) and install the patch for this vulnerability (securitydb.rnx), available from the RealNetworks Web site. See References.

As a workaround, set the kill bit on the Class Identifier (CLSID) FDC7A535-4070-4B92-A0EA-D9994BCC0DC5. Refer to Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 240797 for information. See References.
