Linux lpd could be used to pass arguments to sendmail

Description:

The line printer daemon (lpd) in Linux distributions could be used to specify arguments to sendmail. An attacker could manipulate the control and data files to execute sendmail with a specified configuration file to gain root access on the system.

Remedy:

For Red Hat Linux 6.0:
Upgrade to the latest version of Ipr (0.48-1 or later), as listed in RHSA-2000:002-01. See References.

For Debian Linux 2.1:
Upgrade to the latest version of lpr (0.48-0.slink1 or later), as listed in Debian Security Advisory 20000109. See References.

For Linux-Mandrake 6.0, 6.1, 7.0, and 7.1:
Upgrade to the latest version of lpr (0.50-3 or later), as listed in MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2000:054 : lpr. See References.

For SGI IRIX:
Upgrade to the latest version of IRIX (6.5.20 or later), as listed in SGI Security Advisory 20030406-02-P. See References.
