Expreserve allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files

Description:
Expreserve has a race condition that allowed attackers to overwrite any file on the system.

Remedy:
For HP-UX:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Hewlett-Packard Security Bulletin HPSBUX9607-033. See References.
For SunOS:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in CERT Security Advisory CA-1996-19. See References.
For other distributions:
Contact your vendor for upgrade or patch information.
As a workaround, strip the suid bit from the expreserve executable; expreserve is capable of running with limited permissions.
