Linux kernel get_user_pages function denial of service
| linux-kernel-getuserpages-dos (43550) |
Description:
The Linux kernel is vulnerable to a denial of service, caused by an error in the get_user_pages function. A local attacker could exploit this vulnerability using a large number of calls to allocate newly zeroed pages resulting in a denial of service.
Platforms Affected:
- Canonical, Ubuntu 6.06 LTS
- Canonical, Ubuntu 7.10
- Canonical, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
- Linux, Kernel 2.6.24
- Linux, Kernel 2.6.25
- Novell, OpenSUSE 11.0
- Novell, SLE SDK 10 SP2
- Novell, SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 SP2 DEBUGINFO
- Novell, SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 SP2
- Novell, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 SP2
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 4 WS
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 5
- RedHat, Enterprise Linux 5 Client
- RedHat, Linux Advanced Workstation 2.1 Itanium
Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of the Linux kernel (2.6.25.9 or later), available from The Linux Kernel Archives Web site. See References.
Consequences:
Denial of Service

- CVE-2008-2372: The Linux kernel 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 before 2.6.25.9 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of calls to the get_user_pages function, which lacks a ZERO_PAGE optimization and results in allocation of useless newly zeroed pages.
