Microsoft Windows NT/2000 NetBIOS Name Server spoofed name conflict
| netbios-name-server-spoofing (5035) |
Description:
The NetBIOS Name Server (NBNS) protocol in Windows NT and 2000 allows network peers to assist in managing name conflicts. The NBNS protocol is vulnerable to a denial of service attack. A remote attacker can send a spoofed NetBIOS Name Conflict message to the NetBIOS name service that would cause the system to release its name on the network. This prevents other computers on the network from requesting services from the system.
A tool called NBName, originally discussed at the DefCon conference, exploits this vulnerability.
Platforms Affected:
- Microsoft, Windows 2000
- Microsoft, Windows NT 4.0
Remedy:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS01-044, or MS02-001, or MS02-018. See References.
For Windows NT Server 4.0, Terminal Server Edition:
Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS00-047, but it has been superseded by the patch released with MS01-033, which has been superseded by the patch released with MS02-018. See References.
For Windows NT 4.0:
Microsoft originally provided patches for this vulnerability in MS00-047, MS01-033, MS01-041, and MS02-001, but they have been superseded by the patch released with MS02-018. See References.
For IIS:
Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS01-033, but it has been superseded by the patch released with MS01-044 and 02-018, and then superseded by the patch released with MS03-018. See References.
For Windows 2000:
Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS01-033, but it has been superseded by the patch released with MS02-001. See References.
Consequences:
Denial of Service
