Web servers allows attacker to remotely retrieve session ID cookies
| session-cookie-remote-retrieval (5396) |
Description:
Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) and possibly other Web servers fail to properly support secure Session ID cookies, allowing secure and non-secure Web pages to be viewed with the same Session ID. If a user views a secure Web page, a Session ID cookie is generated and sent to the visiting user. However, if a user views a non-secure Web page on the same site, the same Session ID cookie is used and is sent in plaintext. This could allow a remote attacker with complete control over the communications to connect to secure Web pages using the visiting user's Session ID cookie and perform actions on the user's behalf, such as placing orders or viewing sensitive information.
Platforms Affected:
- Microsoft, IIS 4.0
- Microsoft, IIS 5.0
Remedy:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS00-080 or MS01-041. See References.
For Windows NT 4.0:
Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS00-080, MS01-041, and MS02-001, but they have been superseded by the Security Roll-up patch released with MS02-018. See References.
For IIS:
Microsoft originally provided a patch for this vulnerability in MS02-018, but it was superseded by the patch released with MS02-062, and then superseded by the patch released with MS03-018. See References.
Consequences:
