SGI LOCKOUT function allows file creation and corruption

Description:
The LOCKOUT functionality of the IRIX login(1) program contains a vulnerability that allows files to be created or corrupted if the value of the LOCKOUT variable is greater than zero.

Remedy:
Disable the LOCKOUT functionality by placing a '#' character in front of the line beginning with "LOCKOUT" in the '/etc/default/login' file.

Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in SGI Security Advisory, September 15, 1997. See References.
If you are running another version of IRIX it is suggested you upgrade to a supported version and then apply the patches listed in the SGI Security Advisory.
