APC apcupsd denial of service

Description:
Apcupsd creates a world-writable file "apcupsd.pid" under /var/run/ at startup, which is used by the daemon's scripts to stop the apcupsd process during a restart or shutdown. A local attacker can overwrite the apcupsd.pid file with an arbitrary process ID to cause the system to crash, during restart or shutdown.

Remedy:
Upgrade to the latest version of apcupsd (3.8.0 or later), available from the APC UPS Daemon Web site. See References.

Upgrade to the latest version of apcupsd (3.8.0-1 or later), as listed in MandrakeSoft Security Advisory MDKSA-2000:077 : apcupsd. See References.
