Sun Solaris patchadd symlink attack
| solaris-patchadd-symlink (5789) |
Description:
Sun Solaris is vulnerable to a symbolic link attack, due to a vulnerability in patchadd. Patchadd is a patch management tool used to install patches on Solaris. When patchadd is executed, files are created in the /tmp directory with mode 0666, using predictable file names, which include the pid of patchadd. A local attacker can guess the pid of patchadd and create temporary files in the /tmp directory that are symbolically linked to system files. An attacker can use this vulnerability to gain elevated privileges, execute arbitrary commands on the system, or corrupt system files.
