Sun Solaris snmpXdmid malformed DMI request buffer overflow

solaris-snmpxdmid-bo (6245) The risk level is classified as HighHigh Risk

Description:

Sun Solaris is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the snmpXdmid daemon. The 'snmpXdmid' service is a mapping tool for SNMP and DMI (Desktop Management Interface) requests and is installed with root privileges. By causing the snmpXdmid daemon to translate a malformed DMI request into an SNMP trap, a remote attacker can overflow a buffer to gain root access to the system.

Platforms Affected:

  • Sun, Solaris 10 x86
  • Sun, Solaris 10 SPARC
  • Sun, Solaris 2.6
  • Sun, Solaris 8 x86
  • Sun, Solaris 8 SPARC
  • Sun, Solaris 9 SPARC
  • Sun, Solaris 9 x86

Remedy:

For Solaris 2.6:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Sun Microsystems, Inc. Security Bulletin #00207. See References.

For Solaris 8, 9 and 10:
