Description:

SCO OpenServer is vulnerable to a buffer overflow caused by a vulnerability in the sendmail program, which is installed with the MMDF (Multi-channel Memo Distribution Facility) package. The sendmail program fails to properly handle command line arguments. By using command line arguments and sending a string containing 3000 characters or more, an attacker can overflow the buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system with MMDF subsystem privileges.

Platforms Affected:

  • SCO, SCO OpenServer 5.0.6

Remedy:

Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in SCO System Security Enhancement (SSE) SSE072B 11-Apr-2001. See References.

As a workaround, chmod -s /opt/K/SCO/MMDF/2.43.3b/usr/lib/sendmail.
