Description:

The 'ld.so' and 'ld-linux.so' dynamic linkers in some Linux distributions are vulnerable to a buffer overflow when reporting errors. By forcing an error while calling a dynamically linked setuid program with a long program name (argv[0]), a local attacker can overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system. An attacker can use this vulnerability to gain root privileges on the system.

Remedy:

For ld.so/ld-linux.so versions prior to 1.9.5:
Upgrade to the latest version of ld.so/ld-linux.so (1.9.5 or later), as listed in BugTraq Mailing List posting dated Feb 4 1998 10:20AM. See References.

For Caldera OpenLinux 1.1:
Upgrade to the latest ld.so package (1.7.14-5 or later) as listed in Caldera Systems, Inc. Security Advisory SA-1997.11. See References.
