Microsoft SQL Server SQLXML ISAPI buffer overflow
| mssql-sqlxml-isapi-bo (9328) |
Description:
Microsoft SQLXML, included as part of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Gold or available as a separate add-on component for SQL Server, is vulnerable to a buffer overflow in the Internet Services Application Programming Interface (ISAPI) extension that handles data queries over HTTP. SQLXML is a component used to exchange Extensible Markup Language (XML) data with a SQL server. By sending a malformed HTTP database request to an affected server, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the server or cause the server to fail.
Consequences:
Gain Access
Remedy:
For vulnerability detection:
Enable the following checks in the ISS Protection Platform:
MssqlSqlxmlIsapiBo
MS02-030a
Enable the following checks in the ISS Protection Platform:
HTTP_IIS_MSSQL_xml
Block or restrict the following in the ISS Protection Platform as appropriate to the environment:

For Manual Protection:
Apply the appropriate patch for your system, as listed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-030. See References.
