Microsoft Internet Explorer "Local HTML Resource" cross-site scripting variant
| ie-local-resource-xss (9938) |
Description:
Microsoft Internet Explorer is vulnerable to cross-site scripting, caused by improper input validation within a local HTML resource file included with Internet Explorer. A remote attacker could create a malicious URL link containing embedded script, which would call the affected local HTML resource file and inject the embedded script into this file, which would then be executed in the victim's Web browser once the page is loaded. An attacker could use this vulnerability to execute script within a victim's local security zone, which could allow the attacker to steal cookies from the victim's computer, hijack Hotmail or MSN Messenger accounts, or execute commands on the victim's computer.
Note: This is a new variant of the "Local HTML Resource" vulnerability originally discussed in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS02-023. See References.
